New Song - Say Say
I finally got around to actually turning the lights back on in my recording studio and put some sounds to tape, or at least to hard drive. I have two songs that I had been working on earlier in the summer, but life got in the way, and I shelved them until the muse decided to re-visit. "Say Say", is a pretty straight ahead Rock/Pop song. Its quite an old song, I wrote it almost ten years ago, and recorded a few demos but I never really finished it. It didn't quite fit with the sound of any the bands I played in over the years, although I always played it when I did solo acoustic shows. I am trying to record some songs that have some commercial potential, so this was written with an eye to that. This is a very rough mix, I finished adding the harmonies over the weekend and did a quick mix so I could listen to the song outside the studio, in the car etc. The mix took very little time, which is a good omen. I still need to add some ear candy, and there is a 2 bar gap at 2:05. I left this to leave room for some creativity, and I plan on playing around with some ideas when I get back from a business trip to London next week.

I like it very many!
Actually the gap might be key to commercial success with it: It will confuse DJ's. I mean that honestly. It adds a quirk to it.
Thanks Primal!
Its a simple song harmonically, four chords, so to keep it interesting it needs some dynamics. Hence the gap and turning down the dynamics on the 3rd verse and building them up to the last chorus. Back in secondary school my music teacher once told me the most arresting sound in music is - silence. I figure the gap would help grab attention and maybe some subtle ear candy could be inserted.
Cracking! That was great, John. You could run a subliminal commercial for the GAP in the gap. Now that would be a money-maker. Have someone whisper "Gap...gap...gap...ap" in an echoey way, " Terrific bargains! bargains! rgains! gains! ns!" And then resume the song.
You're right. I really should do consultancy, shouldn't I.
Your San Fran shots are smashing, by the way. I've been twice and it rained both times so I couldn't even get a decent shot of the Golden Gate bridge.
Thansk Sam
I am waiting and ready to sell my soul to the man. Actually I think I did that about 17 years ago, when I took my first job.
Maybe I should do the meeting the devil at the cross roads thingy. It worked for Robert Johson. I've idled around a few cross roads in my time, casual like, with a guitar in a batter case, but Satan must be busy, He keeps missing the appointment.
The devil's been off finding work for idle hands. He took arguably the idlest, George Bush's, and just look at what he's done with them! The poor devil's rushed off his feet now just trying to keep up with ole W.
I like your song toots, but where are the photos of your trip, that's what I'd like to know??
Sam! It is Gappy, or I could see it as a back for a blended whiskey ad, where old time drifts into new time but the enjoyment is the same.
Squee John, that's what you should be doing sending it out to the evil but wealthy market men (who needs a soul anyway)
Coming FMC coming. Might be the weekend though with the work load. Twas a great trip. Lovely weather.
I"m glad Darling, nothing like a good break to calm the body and mind.
Actually 'twas a work trip to London, and not calm at all. But, I got 2 weekends in Ireland either side of the work week and great fun was had. My 3 year old daughter came with me and she had a blast.
